    Two-particle propagator and magnetic susceptibility in the Hubbard model- An improved treatment

    We treat the two-particle Green's function in the Hubbard model using the recently developed tau-CPA, a hybrid treatment that applies the coherent-potential approximation (CPA) up to a time tau related to the inverse of the band width, after which the system is averaged using the virtual-crystal approximation (VCA). This model, with suitable approximations, does predict magnetism for a modified Stoner criterion. The evaluation of the two-particle propagator in the tau-CPA requires the solution of the pure CPA, within whose formalism the vertex correction and the weighted Green's functions are obtained. The dynamical susceptibility, including the vertex correction and the weighted scattering by the residual interaction, is calculated and shows a spin wave spectrum in the ferromagnetic regime

    Single-incision vs. conventional laparoscopic appendectomy : a case-match study

    Background: Three-port laparoscopic appendectomy is considered standard in many countries for the surgical treatment of acute appendicitis. Single-incision laparoscopic technique has been recently introduced and is supposed to minimize the aggression induced by surgery. Regarding appendectomy, comparison with standard laparoscopy, benefits and drawbacks of this novel technique remain to be evaluated. The goal of this study was to assess single-incision laparoscopic appendectomy compared to conventional laparoscopic appendectomy in terms of operation time, length of hospital stay, complication rate, and postoperative antibiotherapy rate. Methods: From February 2011 to December 2011, single-incision laparoscopic appendectomy was proposed to patients admitted to the emergency room of the University Hospital of Lausanne (CHUV, Lausanne, Switzerland), diagnosed with uncomplicated acute appendicitis. Preoperative patients' information, technical difficulties during the operation, and postoperative follow-ups were recorded. Every patient who underwent single-incision laparoscopic appendectomy (n = 20) was matched 1:3 conventional laparoscopic appendectomy (n = 60), controlling for age, gender, body mass index, American Society of Anesthesiologists score, and histopathological findings. Results: No statistically significant differences for median operation time, length of hospital stay, complication rate, and need for postoperative antibiotherapy were found. In 5 out of 20 single-incision laparoscopic appendectomy patients the Endoloop® Ligature was judged difficult to put in place. Conclusion: This study suggests that single-incision laparoscopic appendectomy is a feasible and effective operative technique for uncomplicated acute appendicitis

    Doping Dependence of Collective Spin and Orbital Excitations in Spin 1 Quantum Antiferromagnet La2x_{2-x}Srx_xNiO4_4 Observed by X-rays

    We report the first empirical demonstration that resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) is sensitive to \emph{collective} magnetic excitations in S=1S=1 systems by probing the Ni L3L_3-edge of La2x_{2-x}Srx_xNiO4_4 (x=0,0.33,0.45x = 0, 0.33, 0.45). The magnetic excitation peak is asymmetric, indicating the presence of single and multi spin-flip excitations. As the hole doping level is increased, the zone boundary magnon energy is suppressed at a much larger rate than that in hole doped cuprates. Based on the analysis of the orbital and charge excitations observed by RIXS, we argue that this difference is related to the orbital character of the doped holes in these two families. This work establishes RIXS as a probe of fundamental magnetic interactions in nickelates opening the way towards studies of heterostructures and ultra-fast pump-probe experiments.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, see ancillary files for the supplemental materia

    Association between CT-Based Preoperative Sarcopenia and Outcomes in Patients That Underwent Liver Resections.

    This retrospective observational study aimed to evaluate whether preoperative sarcopenia, assessed by CT imaging, was associated with postoperative clinical outcomes and overall survival in patients that underwent liver resections. Patients operated on between January 2014 and February 2020 were included. The skeletal muscle index (SMI) was measured at the level of the third lumbar vertebra on preoperative CT scans. Preoperative sarcopenia was defined based on pre-established SMI cut-off values. The outcomes were postoperative morbidity, length of hospital stay (LOS), and overall survival. Among 355 patients, 212 (59.7%) had preoperative sarcopenia. Patients with sarcopenia were significantly older (63.5 years) and had significantly lower BMIs (23.9 kg/m <sup>2</sup> ) than patients without sarcopenia (59.3 years, p < 0.01, and 27.7 kg/m <sup>2</sup> , p < 0.01, respectively). There was no difference in LOS (8 vs. 8 days, p = 0.75), and the major complication rates were comparable between the two groups (11.2% vs. 11.3%, p = 1.00). The median overall survival times were comparable between patients with sarcopenia and those without sarcopenia (15 vs. 16 months, p = 0.87). Based on CT assessment alone, preoperative sarcopenia appeared to have no impact on postoperative clinical outcomes or overall survival in patients that underwent liver resections. Future efforts should also consider muscle strength and physical performance, in addition to imaging, for preoperative risk stratification

    Anisotropic spin fluctuations and multiple superconducting gaps in hole-doped Ba_0.7K_0.3Fe_2As_2: NMR in a single crystal

    We report the first ^{75}As-NMR study on a single crystal of the hole-doped iron-pnictide superconductor Ba_{0.7}K_{0.3}Fe_2As_{2} (T_c = 31.5 K). We find that the Fe antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations are anisotropic and are weaker compared to underdoped copper-oxides or cobalt-oxide superconductors. The spin lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 decreases below T_c with no coherence peak and shows a step-wise variation at low temperatures, which is indicative of multiple superconducting gaps, as in the electron-doped Pr(La)FeAsO1x_{1-x}Fx_{x}. Furthermore, no evidence was obtained for a microscopic coexistence of a long-range magnetic and superconductivity

    Assessment of Preoperative Liver Function in Patients with Hepatocellular Carcinoma - The Albumin-Indocyanine Green Evaluation (ALICE) Grade.

    Most patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) have underlying liver disease, therefore, precise preoperative evaluation of the patient's liver function is essential for surgical decision making. We developed a grading system incorporating only two variables, namely, the serum albumin level and the indocyanine green retention rate at 15 minutes (ICG R15), to assess the preoperative liver function, based on the overall survival of 1868 patients with HCC who underwent liver resection. We then tested the model in a European cohort (n = 70) and analyzed the predictive power for the postoperative short-term outcome. The Albumin-Indocyanine Green Evaluation (ALICE) grading system was developed in a randomly assigned training cohort: linear predictor = 0.663 × log10ICG R15 (%)-0.0718 × albumin (g/L) (cut-off value: -2.20 and -1.39). This new grading system showed a predictive power for the overall survival similar to the Child-Pugh grading system in the validation cohort. Determination of the ALICE grade in Child-Pugh A patients allowed further stratification of the postoperative prognosis. This result was reproducible in the European cohort. Determination of the ALICE grade allowed better prediction of the risk of postoperative liver failure and mortality (ascites: grade 1, 2.1%; grade 2, 6.5%; grade 3, 16.0%; mortality: grade 1, 0%; grade 2, 1.3%; grade 3, 5.3%) than the previously reported model based on the presence/absence of portal hypertension. This new grading system is a simple method for prediction of the postoperative long-term and short-term outcomes

    Early molecular layer interneuron hyperactivity triggers Purkinje neuron degeneration in SCA1.

    Toxic proteinaceous deposits and alterations in excitability and activity levels characterize vulnerable neuronal populations in neurodegenerative diseases. Using in vivo two-photon imaging in behaving spinocerebellar ataxia type 1 (Sca1) mice, wherein Purkinje neurons (PNs) degenerate, we identify an inhibitory circuit element (molecular layer interneurons [MLINs]) that becomes prematurely hyperexcitable, compromising sensorimotor signals in the cerebellum at early stages. Mutant MLINs express abnormally elevated parvalbumin, harbor high excitatory-to-inhibitory synaptic density, and display more numerous synaptic connections on PNs, indicating an excitation/inhibition imbalance. Chemogenetic inhibition of hyperexcitable MLINs normalizes parvalbumin expression and restores calcium signaling in Sca1 PNs. Chronic inhibition of mutant MLINs delayed PN degeneration, reduced pathology, and ameliorated motor deficits in Sca1 mice. Conserved proteomic signature of Sca1 MLINs, shared with human SCA1 interneurons, involved the higher expression of FRRS1L, implicated in AMPA receptor trafficking. We thus propose that circuit-level deficits upstream of PNs are one of the main disease triggers in SCA1
